Melville Senior High School
Iron Stain Removal
Project Scope
Iron staining is prevalent in Melville where iron and calcium is present in high concentrations in the ground water. Melville Senior High School uses bore water to irrigate their playing fields and gardens.
The iron staining at this site was deeply ingrained into their limestone amphitheatre style steps. In a preliminary site consult it was clear that iron had accumulated over several years and was an exceptionally bad case of staining.
Heavier mineral accumulation is always characterised by the darker orange to brown tinge on paving, fences and walls. Our brief for this site was to simply remove the iron staining on the limestone steps.
Stain Removal
The process of stain removal is straightforward:
- Apply acid based wash to areas
- Leave for 10 – 15 minutes
- Wash off with fresh water.
The iron staining was over a larger area and had been allowed to accumulate for longer.
We brought in a pressure washer to efficicently and consistently remove the tain.
Sprinklers
Melville Senior High School’s sports oval sprinklers have oversprayed onto the limestone steps.
Overspray occurs when is it windy and warm. Sprinklers become less efficient in these conditions as water particles stay in the air longer and drift to places that aren’t usually under the sprinklers trajectory.
The sprinklers use untreated bore water and that is the source of the problem.
Even tiny amounts of iron and calcium will accumulate over long periods and in smaller areas such as garden decor.
Long term Prevention
The root cause of iron staining is that the bore water is untreated. By effectively removing iron and calcium, bore water can be used to irrigate sports ovals, gardens and lawns.
Overspray from sprinklers will not continue to damage paving, walls, roofs and decor.
The existing irrigation remains in place but receives cleaner, healthier water that doesn’t cause iron staining.
Buildings and property will not collect the accumulation of iron and calcium after an iron treatment system is installed.

Safety
The acid-base solution used to remove the iron stain has a very high acidity (pH) level of 14. It is diluted with water before being applied to areas to ensure an even spread across surfaces so it looks consistent once removed.
Throughout the process our team wear face masks, goggles and gloves.
The acid is neutralised in the process of being washed off as the additional water dilutes the acid. The acidity levels are reduced to near alkaline – fresh water (pH. 7) and the area can safely be used.
For public areas and especially schools, the clean up process of rebalancing the acidity levels is just as important as removing the stain.
Iron Staining Across Perth
Properties that use bore water all have the same problems of iron, calcium and salt in their water.
Some areas have higher concentrations of these minerals and the problem is highly visible with orange walls and driveways.
We remove and prevent iron stain from bore water so it can be used throughout homes, gardens and public places.
Once minerals are removed and rebalanced bore water is remarkebly healthy in the same way mineral water is.
